Part 1: Nursing Research

Purpose: Write a critical appraisal that demonstrates comprehension of two quantitative research studies

PICOT Question:

Population: Nurses

Intervention: Preventive education

Comparison: Lack of preventive education

Outcome: Incidence

PICOT Q:

Is there a lower incidence in the administration of medications to hospitalized patients when nurses have preventive education on medication errors in practice and the importance of the use of medication marking compared to nurses without preventive education?

Use the practice PICOT QUESTION and two quantitative, peer-reviewed research articles (See File attached).

According to the template “Research Critique Guidelines Part II”.

1. Summarize two  quantitative  studies (See files  quantitative  2 and 3)

2. Explain the ways in which the findings might be used in nursing practice, and address ethical considerations associated with the conduct of the study.

3. Provide a rationale

4. Include examples

Part 2: Trends and Issues in Health Care

Choose a legislator on the state or federal level who is also a nurse

1. Discuss the importance of the legislator/nurse’s role as an advocate for improving health care delivery.

2.  What specific bills has the legislator/nurse sponsored or supported that have influenced health care.

Part 3: Trends and Issues in Health Care

Research legislation that has occurred within the last 5 years at the state or federal level as a result of nurse advocacy.

1. Describe the legislation and what was accomplished.

2. What additional steps need to be taken to continue advocacy for this issue?

Part 4: Trends and Issues in Health Care

Topic:  Advocacy Through Legislation

Nurses often become motivated to change aspects within the larger health care system based on their real-world experience. As such, many nurses take on an advocacy role to influence a change in regulations, policies, and laws that govern the larger health care system.

Identify a problem or concern in your state (Florida), community, or organization that has the capacity for advocacy through legislation.

Research the issue and use the “Advocacy Through Legislation” (See file attached) template to complete this part

Research Critique Guidelines – Part II

The first time you mention each article, put the name of the study in quotation marks and indicate the authors and the date of publication. Then, every time you refer to the article, mention the authors and the date.

Example

The article “Research Critique Guidelines” by Smith in 2020 states the nursing is a profession…….

Smith (2020), in his article, affirms that

Use this document to organize your essay. Successful completion of this assignment requires that you provide a rationale, include examples, and reference content from the studies in your responses.

Quantitative Studies

Background

1. Summary of studies. Include problem, significance to nursing, purpose, objective, and research question.

How do these two articles support the nurse practice issue you chose?

1. Discuss how these two articles will be used to answer your PICOT question.

2. Describe how the interventions and comparison groups in the articles compare to those identified in your PICOT question.

Method of Study:

1. State the methods of the two articles you are comparing and describe how they are different.

2. Consider the methods you identified in your chosen articles and state one benefit and one limitation of each method.

Results of Study

1. Summarize the key findings of each study in one or two comprehensive paragraphs.

2. What are the implications of the two studies you chose in nursing practice?

Outcomes Comparison

1. What are the anticipated outcomes for your PICOT question?

2. How do the outcomes of your chosen articles compare to your anticipated outcomes?

Proportion of medication error reporting
and associated factors among nurses: a
cross sectional study
Abebaw Jember1*, Mignote Hailu1, Anteneh Messele2, Tesfaye Demeke3 and Mohammed Hassen1

Abstract

Background: A medication error (ME) is any preventable event that may cause or lead to inappropriate medication
use or patient harm. Voluntary reporting has a principal role in appreciating the extent and impact of medication errors.
Thus, exploration of the proportion of medication error reporting and associated factors among nurses is important to
inform service providers and program implementers so as to improve the quality of the healthcare services.

Methods: Institution based quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 397 nurses from March 6 to May
10, 2015. Stratified sampling followed by simple random sampling technique was used to select the study participants.
The data were collected using structured self-administered questionnaire which was adopted from studies conducted in
Australia and Jordan. A pilot study was carried out to validate the questionnaire before data collection for this study.
Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to identify factors associated with the proportion of
medication error reporting among nurses. An adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was computed to
determine the level of significance.

Result: The proportion of medication error reporting among nurses was found to be 57.4%. Regression analysis showed
that sex, marital status, having made a medication error and medication error experience were significantly associated
with medication error reporting.

Conclusion: The proportion of medication error reporting among nurses in this study was found to be higher than
other studies.

Background
Medication therapy is the most common intervention pre-
scribed for healthcare consumers [1] and safe medication
administration represents one of the routine, highly com-
plex and essential nursing care responsibilities [2]. Medica-
tion administration is amongst the potentially hazardous
nursing tasks in hospitals because of liability to errors [3].
The reporting of error incidents and specific phases of
healthcare delivery such as the safe use of medications can
improve the safety of patients [4].
A single medication error (ME) may prolong hospital

stay or even end up in death. This affects the quality and

continuity of the healthcare services [5] by affecting pa-
tient safety which is an important indicator of healthcare
quality and encompasses various nursing care procedures.
Executing a ME has been seen to be psychologically dev-
astating to the nurse and harmful to the patient [6].
Globally, MEs present a substantial contribution

ABSTRACT:
Introduction: To provide safe, effective, timely and individualized care is a major challenge in health
care. Currently, the main errors in health care are related to medication errors. These errors can cause
damages, especially in pediatrics, because of organs’ immaturity and variation in the weight and body
surface. In this way, the importance of nursing in this scenario is perceived to guarantee a safe care.
Objective: To investigate the practice of nursing professionals about drug administration process, as
well as the circumstances that lead to errors.
Method: Descriptive, quantitative study with 147 nursing professionals in Neonatal and Pediatric
Intensive Units. To collect data, a questionnaire was used elaborated and based on the
recommendations of the Guideline for Prevention of Intravascular catheter-related infections with
questions related to the practice of drug administration and afterwards a descriptive data analysis was
used.
Results: The professionals pointed out weaknesses in the practice, such as double checking of
medications, administration of medication prepared by the colleague, delays and lack in checking the
prescriptions. The most common errors were derived from the wrong dose and the environmental
factors were presented as a critical point.
