Assignment: Workplace Environment Assessment

Clearly, diagnosis is a critical aspect of healthcare. However, the ultimate purpose of a diagnosis is the development and application of a series of treatments or protocols. Isolated recognition of a health issue does little to resolve it.

In this module’s Discussion, you applied the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory to diagnose potential problems with the civility of your organization. In this Portfolio Assignment, you will continue to analyze the results and apply published research to the development of a proposed treatment for any issues uncovered by the assessment.

Summary of Results – Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory

Civility in the workplace influences many things including, how nurses work, how they deliver patient care, manage emotions and communicate respectfully. It is therefore, the responsibility of nurses to cultivate civility in the workplace. The management has the responsibility of ensuring the workplace is civilized by empowering nurses speak in cases on uncivil encounters and when there is infringement of patent safety. To limit or hinder the occurrence of uncivil workplace, key factors to consider are effective communication, well-established conflict negotiation and problem-solving procedures.

Identify two things that surprised you about the results. Also identify one idea that you believed prior to conducting the Assessment that was confirmed.

One thing that surprised me about the results was that civility centralizes genuine respect. Respect for each other in the workplace ensures equality and enables everyone to feel valued. Civility in the workplace is not a one-man thing. It requires the efforts of every member of the organization starting from the top management, the leaders and the employees. The combined efforts from all these groups promotes a civil environment as a way to ultimately enhance patient safety and care.

The idea that civility in the workplace is not a simple matter but it needs to be worked on was confirmed by the assessment results. The DESC model clearly details how conversations regarding civility can be enforced in the workplace to inform employees on the basics of a civil workplace and effective ways of dealing with uncivil situations.

What do the results of the Assessment suggest about the health and civility of your workplace?

The work environment assessment suggests that the health and civility of my workplace are moderate. There are some aspects of civility that are not fully applied in the workplace. My workplace is civil because communication from the top management to entire organizational levels is transparent and direct. Transparency increase workplace collaboration and creates a n environment of trust. The management also recognizes, acknowledges, and rewards the efforts of each member of the organization. Such acts motivates employees to become hardworking and increases retention of employees. There is a crucial consideration to time such as responding to emails on time, being punctual in arrivals to the workplace, and attending meetings (UT System Administration Office of Employee and Organizational Development, 2015)

Civility in the workplace bears a crucial role in creating and maintaining a healthy work environment. Civility centralizes genuine respect. There are some aspects of civility that are not fully applied in the workplace. There is a point in my professional work as a nurse where I encountered a significant form of incivility in the workplace. My colleagues and superiors were acting discriminately towards me because of my gender. For example, when there are meetings when we need to discuss crucial matters, they do not allow me to talk or give input. However, my contributions were disregarded whenever I had a chance because I am female. My male colleagues receive preferential treatment, they are given ideal work assignments, and their contributions are welcomed and implemented since they are males (Strategic Human Resource, 2019).

I brought up the issue, and the management took specific actions to curb discrimination. The organization conducted training on all employees on discrimination based on gender and other forms. In this way, all organization’s members had a chance to understand their biases and discrimination and work towards eliminating them. The organization also established a clear policy on discrimination. `The policy was to ensure that whoever is discriminated has a chance of airing complaints, and severe penalties are given to those who discriminate (Fuhl, 2020).
